Story Research

Interactive Stories:

Alien Journey - http://mle.plymouthart.ac.uk/mod/resource/view.php?id=16100
Alien Journey is easy to comprehend as it is simple and the animation is easy to follow because everything within the story can be told through the animation with the speech bubbles. The only place where the speech bubble really helped contribute to you understanding the short story is at the beginning where he sees the U.F.O because you could quite see clearly what the thing in the sky was and the speech bubble clears that up for you from then on you can grasp the rest of the story just through the animation apart from when they're speaking.

In Fear Of Death - http://mle.plymouthart.ac.uk/mod/resource/view.php?id=16101
In Fear Of Death is mainly told through the subtitles at the top, the animation itself just helps you picture the story being told through the subtitles. There's also haunting music within the background of the story which really gives it a scary feel with a lot of depth.

The Story Of YU - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0DKz_4cWys
In this animation the colouring is very dark, because it's touching on a dark subject of bullying; it also creates a sense of depth to the animation. The sound effects is a sad melody, because bullying is a sad thing. The wording in the video really helps the viewer get the message of what it's about describing the things bullies would do to her and the way she felt. Towards the main writing is white but one letter is red emphasising that bullying should stop. At the end the background is white and the writing is black to be more formal as it give facts about bullying.

Three Act Narrative Summary:
In a three act narrative there's a beginning, middle and end. The beginning sets the scene and introduces you to the characters of the story and usually reveals a plot to the narrative that will lead on the middle. The middle is in conjunction with the beginning and anything that happens in the beginning is usually a catalyst for something that will happen within the middle, the middle is usually quite action packed or it builds up the action whether it's a romance or a horror. The ending is usually a summary of what has happened and reveals the moral of the story, the ending can also be action packed; when it's action packed it's usually because there's a twist within the narrative where the event of something that happened towards the beginning effects the ending. Basically the ending usually ties the narrative together, but it can end on a cliffhanger which will usually lead on to another narrative.

Game Plots:

Heavy Rain (PS3):

  • In act 1 You're investigating a murder and the only clue is a origami figure. The next day Ethans son runs off and out into the road and Ethan tries to save him from the oncoming car, but it's too late as he dies and Ethan gets put into a coma. After 2 years of being in a coma Ethan has to look after his other child Shaun but suffers from constant blackouts and depression from the accident; Ethan blacks out one day and Shaun disappears.During the disappearance of Shaun there's a killer on the loose that leave little origami models behind after each victim, this is soon tied to the disappearance of his son.
  • In act 2 Ethan then goes on a search for his son asking every person in sight reporting it to the police, until he comes across the sewer where he can hear son screaming he tries to get in there but can't due to glass and barbed all along the sewer. You then take on the role of the Origami killer as a child and realise that he had lost his twin brother when he was young and you find out the Origami killer is the police detective investigating the case.
  • At the end of the game you manage find a way of getting to your son but your choices throughout the game dictate whether you get to Shaun in time before he drowns from Origami killer.
Half Life (PC, PS3, 360):

  • A new employee mess' up an experiment in Black Mesa which cause another dimension to open called Xen. The dimension invites monsters in to the real world and causes many deaths of employees. The surviving employees have to gather up the rest of the other survivors and enter the alien dimension to stop them. Freeman defeats the alien leader, but another alien race begins in Black Mesa. But then a marine corporal collapses the portal and G-Man destroys Black Mesa with a nuclear warhead, detaining Shepard in stasis.
  • 20 years later G-Man brings Freeman out of stasis and puts him in a dystopian world ruled by the Combine; which is a faction consisting of aliens and humans that caused Black Mesa to conquer earth. In City 17 Freeman meets surviving members of the Black Mesa incident. The Xen aliens who've been imprisoned by the Combine assist the resistance with the surviving member of the Black Mesa incident. When presence is know by the Combine spokesman, Freeman becomes a prime target for the Combine. Two of the survivor are then captured by the Combine and Freeman attacks the Combines Citadel to rescue them. Once rescued Freeman then become engulfed in a an explosion.
  • Freeman finally awakes in a wrecked train car with Alyx. Then they begin a journey through the white forest to a missile base in the mountains controlled by resistance. On the way they're attacked and Alyx gets seriously injured but luckily the Xen aliens heal her. Freeman is then spoken to by G-Man in a dream saying that he's caught up with him again and they reach the resistance base and deliver the data that has the codes to destroy the portal. When they try and shut down the superportal to cut off the Combine from the outside they're attacked by Combine advisors, who koll Eli Vance before they are driven off by Alyx's pet robot. Finally they shut down the portal and keep the Combine out.

Flash Experimentation

Motion Tween:

First I used the shape tool to create a shape:

I then right clicked and created a motion tween on the shape, and clicked on the frame i wanted it to stop on and dragged the shape to where I wanted it to go:

Shape Tween:

To create the shape tween I first of all clicked the shape tool and created a pentagon:

I then right clicked and created shape tween and enlarged it to the size I wanted it to go to whilst clicking on the frame I wanted it to stop enlarging on:

Text Tween:

First I created a shape on the first frame:

I then created a text layer on the layer than I wanted the tween to end on and clicked Modify - Break Apart so that I scramble the text:

I then dragged the shape frame to the text one so the shape merged into the text:

Button:

To create the button we first of all used the rectangle tool to create button and placed a keyframe so it would be in the animation for the whole time:

I then made then button change colour whenever anyone hovered over or pressed the button to give it a professional feel:

I forgot to take any more print screens after this, but I then created an action script for the button and made the animation stop on the first frame by putting 'stop()' in the first line of the actions, I then put 'gotoAndPlay' in the second line that when then button was clicked it would play from frame 2.

Short Story Ideas

First of all I went on to Google and looked up film genres and to decipher what type of story I could do.

Story Genres:

  • Adventure - Usually based around an mission and involves killing set in a sparsely populated area e.g. a mountain, desert or jungle.
  • Crime - Based upon a crime from the perpetrators point of view revealing the plot and outcome of the crime.
  • Mystery - Usually a story where something is kept from the main characters until the climax.
  • Fantasy - Action packed story that involves made creatures.
  • Horror - A story that is deep and dark, tends to involve a lot of killing.
  • Romance - A story based upon two people loving each other overcoming situations throughout the story ending happily ever after.
After I had researched story genres I came up with a few Ideas from the top of my head as to what I could do for my story.

Idea One:
Beginning - Guys brother is murdered.
Middle - Guy seeks murderer.
End - Guy kills murderer.

Idea Two:
Beginning - Girl needs money for drugs.
Middle - Girl robs a local convenience store.
End - Girl overdoses.

Idea Three:
Beginning - Guys childhood friend leaves for another country.
Middle - 20 Years later he goes on a search for her.
End - Finally finds her and fall in love in an instant.

Feedback:
The story ideas are good but are quite common as they've been used in many storylines.

Evaluation:
I'm pretty pleased with how my animation turned out, because I started and finished within the day as I only had that much time to do it due to me losing my memory stick the weekend before my deadline. In some aspects of this animation I do prefer it to the other e.g. the man running into the building in this one looks a lot better than what I had done in the one I had lost. The downside to this animation is that I haven't used much scenery compared to my other one. Either way I'm very pleased with how it has turned out and the fact that I managed to get it in by my deadline.
